Samsung is revolutionizing home security with its new Digital Home Key feature, allowing users to unlock their doors with a simple tap of their phone. This innovative technology, powered by the Aliro smart home standard, is set to transform the way we access our homes.
The Digital Home Key was first teased in 2024 and was expected to launch in 2025. However, the CSA's Aliro standard, which enables phone-based smart lock unlocking, only became available in February of this year. The standard utilizes near-field communication (NFC) for tap-to-unlock functionality and supports ultra-wideband (UWB), allowing users to unlock their doors as they approach without even needing to reach for their phone.
In addition to Digital Home Key, Samsung has also integrated American Airlines boarding passes into its Wallet app, enhancing the user experience for travelers.
Digital Home Key is currently rolling out to Samsung smartphones in select regions, with UWB support arriving in April. While there are limited locks that support the Aliro standard, Aqara's U400 lock stands out as 'Aliro-ready,' making it the first potential lock to work seamlessly with Samsung's Digital Home Key. Interestingly, this lock already supports Apple Home Key's hands-free unlocking feature.
To add Digital Home Key to your Samsung Wallet, users must set up a compatible smart lock through SmartThings using Matter. It's important to note that only specific Galaxy smartphones, such as the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and above, as well as the Galaxy S22 Ultra and above, support both NFC and UWB. The full list of compatible devices can be found on Samsung's website.
This groundbreaking feature not only enhances convenience but also raises intriguing questions about the future of home security and the potential for seamless integration with other smart home devices. As Samsung continues to innovate, we can expect further developments in the realm of digital home access.
