Knicks Lock Down Spurs in Defensive Masterclass | Wembanyama Held to 25 as Knicksrally (2026)

The Knicks' 'High-Level' Defense Stifles the Spurs' Streaking Run

NEW YORK -- The Knicks' defensive prowess was on full display Sunday, as they snapped the San Antonio Spurs' 11-game winning streak in a rematch of the NBA Cup Final. The Knicks' 'high-level' defense held the Spurs to a season-low output in a 114-89 victory, showcasing their ability to stifle even the most potent offenses.

Mike Brown, the Knicks' head coach, couldn't pinpoint a single performance as their best defensive showing, but Sunday's game certainly felt like it. The Knicks were dominant throughout, carrying on from their impressive performances over the last week or so. Brown acknowledged the team's 'high-level' defense, stating, 'Even the games we haven't scored a lot of points, like at Chicago and then Houston, our defense has gotten better.'

The Knicks' defense has been a consistent strength this season, with Brown implementing a deep bench and an offensive system that emphasizes sacrifice and teamwork. Earlier in the season, Mikal Bridges was deployed more as a playmaker to diversify the offense, but he was engaged on both ends Sunday, showcasing one of his best all-around games this season. Bridges hit five triples on his way to 25 points, five rebounds, and five steals, many of them leading to transition baskets.

The Knicks' defense has been particularly impressive in the last month, with the team ranking fifth in defensive rating (107 points per 100 possessions). This game makes the Cavaliers loss look like an anomaly, at least for now. The Spurs, who had been shooting 50 percent and nearly 38 percent from 3-point range in February, their best offensive month of the season, were smothered by the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, holding them to just 26.5 percent from 3.

Victor Wembanyama, who scored 42 points with 18 rebounds in his first visit to Madison Square Garden last Christmas Day, was held to 25 points, 13 rebounds, and seven turnovers as the Knicks forced 22 of them. Brown said the Knicks weren't going to change much of what they've been doing defensively just for Wembanyama, and they managed to stay out of foul trouble for most of the day.

Josh Hart, one of the Knicks' vocal leaders and best defensive players, said they have to play playoff defense consistently. 'I think it's just another example of where we can be defensively,' Hart said. 'So we got to continue to build off this and not have lulls at this point. You know, it can't be up and down.'

The Knicks' 'high-level' defense has been a key factor in their success this season, and they will look to continue building on this momentum as they move forward in the playoffs.
